Wednesday, September 23, 2020

This afternoon, the CAIRNS director zoomed in as a guest speaker to Lakota Tech High School in the Pine Ridge Reservation. The speaking opportunity was facilitated by Delmar Toczek, pictured above, who is the Career Planning Coordinator at Lakota Tech. The CAIRNS director was asked to speak about his education (Martin Grade School, Bennett County High School, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and University of Michigan) and professional occupations (Director of the D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History at the Newberry Library in Chicago, Deputy Assistant Director for Cultural Resources at the National Museum of the American Indian in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, faculty member in the Graduate Studies Department at Oglala Lakota College, and Director of the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies at Wingsprings in the Lacreek District of the Pine Ridge Reservation). Delmar is exploring opportunities for Lakota Tech to collaborate with reservation businesses to offer career training experiences for students.
